John Tighe Named Chief Merchant of J.C. Penney

J.C. Penney has appointed John Tighe executive vice president, chief merchant.

Tighe has been with J.C. Penney since 2002. His most recent position was senior vice president and senior general merchandise manager for the men’s, children’s, footwear, handbag, and intimate apparel divisions.

Elizabeth Sweney, the current chief merchant, will serve in an advisory role through the end of the fiscal year, at which point she will retire after 16 years with the retailer.

“John is an extraordinary merchant who, in his career, has curated some of the most high-performing brand portfolios in retail, including leading the growth of JCPenney.com,” said CEO Marvin Ellison. “This broad experience gives him a keen understanding of the retail business, which will be essential to our success as we seize greater opportunities in omnichannel and increased private brand penetration.”

Ellison assumed his position as CEO on Aug. 1.
