Stick a fork in summer—it’s done. This weekend brings both the last days of August and the “unofficial” end of summer, Labor Day (arriving early this year, on Sept. 1). So that means all those Halloween decorations filling the aisles of your local stores are totally fair game.
But before we say farewell to summer, we should take a look back at the things that made it. Butter yellow hung in there pretty well (before orange came and made us forget all about that), we dallied in sardine decor and pretended we were living it up in the Mediterranean (some did IRL). We lived a bohemian style revival (as if it ever really went anywhere), and wore talismans galore. There also was August’s birthstone, peridot, the ideal gem to represent another of our summer color obsessions, pistachio.
August has slipped away, but not without leaving some brilliant jewels behind. Here’s a selection from this month’s inbox.
