Jewelry Store Owner Fatally Shoots Alleged Robber

The store owner, who has not been named, is cooperating with police

A jewelry store owner in Torrance, Calif., shot and killed an armed robbery suspect on March 8, according to Torrance police.

“The store owner stated that there was a subject down inside his store, that had been shot during an attempted robbery of his store,” said Paul Kranke, a sergeant with the Torrance police department. “The subject was armed.”

A gun was found near the body of the deceased.

The store owner, whose name was not confirmed by authorities, was said to be cooperating in the investigation.

The Jewelers’ Security Alliance advises against keeping guns in your store.

“In the overwhelming number of cases where [store personnel are] shot or killed, there was resistance. When robbers are in your store, you’re always in second place,” John J. Kennedy, president of the Jewelers’ Security Alliance, told JCK in 2013. “We are far more interested in protecting the life and safety of jewelers than your product.”
