Jewelry Is a Powerful Tool for Emotional Expression in ‘Marry Me’

Share

Of all the celebrities to partner with, Eugenia Bruni says Jennifer Lopez and their collaboration on the film Marry Me proved to be “serendipitous” and a connection that shares a passion for love, art, and the power of expression through jewelry.

“I knew from the first time I met her that our passion for our creations aligned, and she would be an ongoing muse and supporter for the brand,” Bruni, creative director of Pasquale Bruni, says in an email interview. “She is a contemporary goddess, so strong and feminine, yet sensitive and passionate.”

As Bruni’s maison presents its newest collections for 2022, which were revealed last week in Milan and offer a moody and introspective selection of moonstone and black diamonds, she hopes that the people who watch Marry Me will see the craft, workmanship, and beauty of Pasquale Bruni jewelry throughout the film, which came out Feb. 11 on the Peacock streaming service and in theaters.

GHIRLANDA AMORE E PSICHE Necklace
One of the signature creations from Marry Me is this 18k white gold Ghirlanda Atelier necklace with morganite and white and gray diamonds (price on request).

“It was amazing to know they wanted us to be a part of such a heartwarming film with an incredible cast,” Bruni says. “After reading the script you could draw obvious parallels between Kat Valdez [Lopez’s character] and Jennifer in real life, so it was inspiring to watch an extension of her personality played out on-screen.”

The movie tells the story of pop star Valdez, who marries a stranger in the audience during the concert where she finds out her fiancé has cheated on her. Actor Owen Wilson plays the audience member—a single dad who works as a quiet and compassionate math teacher. The two get to know each other during the course of her crazy media-fueled life, learning to love one another despite the pressures of social media and Valdez’s celebrity.

Bruni herself has been a part of her family’s jewelry business since her father founded it more than 50 years ago. She’s credited with bringing both color and a feminine touch to the jewelry house. She took over as creative director in 2001, adding her own iconic designs to its collections. Her work centers on nature—think leaves, flowers, and butterflies—transformed to represent the journey women collectively take throughout life and its milestones.

GIARDINI SEGRETI Necklace
The Giardini Segreti necklace may be one of the most recognizable pieces Jennifer Lopez wears in Marry Me; it shows up in the pivotal wedding scene. It’s made in 18k rose gold with white and champagne diamonds, $55,000.

Bruni’s jewelry plays a huge role in the movie—it is mentioned by name at the movie’s start, and Lopez wears it during a critical wedding scene. Bruni says Lopez showed such a range of emotions during the movie, giving authenticity to both the character and underlining the emotions that inspire Bruni’s designs.

For example, the Giardini Segreti collection speaks to a woman’s versatility and adaptability—a fitting tribute to 2020, when the line came out. The Aleluiá collection serves as an ode to love, as leaves transform into wings, symbolizing a woman’s empowerment and ability to thrive on any journey.

“The storytelling of this inspiring romantic comedy, where one finds faith in love again through the discovery of one’s true self, truly captured the essence of the collections, from the metamorphosis of Giardini Segreti to the inviting embrace of Aleluiá, a true rebirth of loving oneself and finding resilience in the face of adversity,” Bruni says.
