Jewelry: Not So Basic Black

Black is so very much in again this season that at least one fashion editor has been quoted saying “black is the new black.” The influences combining to resurrect the seemingly universal realization that black is versatile and chic are many—as evidenced by the variety of fashion spreads that highlight jewelry of black gemstones or other materials of black hue.

The February 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar proclaims that what’s in is black, red, floral. Pictured is an elaborate black floral collar from Gucci, a black necklace of leather adorned with a huge shaped leaf from Natalia Brilli, and wing-shape earrings of sterling silver plated with black rhodium from Noor Fares.

The February 2013 issue of Redbook advises readers: “Use black jewelry (and tights) to keep a vibrant outfit from feeling summery.” Pictured is a “gem necklace” from Kendra Scott worn together with a chain necklace form Forever 21. The model wears a Loft top, C. Wonder skirt, and Hanes tights and carries a clutch from Rachel Rachel Roy.

A cozy Uniqlo cashmere sweater is accented with a necklace of black resin beads from Erin McDermott and gold-plated studs from Chloe + Isabel in the January 2013 issue of Real Simple. The model also wears a Mango cape and Big Star pants.

The December 2012–January 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar highlights the look of black lace. Featured jewelry consists of a pair of entirely black drop earrings from Ralph Lauren Vintage Collection and an elaborate necklace tied with black ribbon from Chanel Cruise Versailles. Also pictured is a lace choker-style collar from Rochas.

Also in the December 2012–January 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar: ornate accessories including a bead-adorned collar necklace from Chanel Cruise Versailles and a pair of button earrings from Tacori. The opalescent extras also pictured include earrings from Jill Alberts and a Stephen Webster ring.

The December 2012–January 2013 issue of More advises readers: “Wake up black with edgy details. To make it lively, not maudlin, choose black with oomph.” Jewelry making the cut includes crystal drop earrings and a chunky crystal ring from R.J. Graziano; earrings with black crystal drops from Juliet & Company; a multistrand necklace of metal chains from H&M; and a white enamel bracelet from Express that somehow snuck onto the page. The items featured are all represent “fun, festive fashion under $100.”

Actress Ashley Greene is pictured in the November 2012 issue of Marie Claire accenting a mixed print ensemble with a black ring from Alexis Bittar. Her sweater and pants are from Balmain; her top is from Diane von Furstenberg.

An ad for the Swarovski Crystallized store that appears in the Dec. 10, 2012, issue of New York magazine pictures a necklace of black crystals.

A current ad for Etro adds a black cuff bracelet and footwear to an asymmetrically shaped floral print garment. Floral is an important trend of the season. Much more about floral motifs in jewelry will follow in upcoming posts.
