Jen’s Obsession: Lisa Kim’s Starburst Opal Earrings in Gold

Lisa Kim’s Aurora Borealis ring, entered into the 2014 JCK Jewelers’ Choice Awards, was the very first piece of jewelry I saw from the Los Angeles–based designer, and it left a mark on my memory. With yellow gold claw-like prongs clutching an Ethiopian opal, the piece was whimsical, magical, and fierce—a direct reflection of Kim’s signature style, which she calls a mix of abstract birds and a “dreamlike fusion of crystals and teeth.” (These mythological and warrior-like effects evolved from her stint working with Tony Swatton, prop master for the Capital One “What’s in your wallet?” Viking commercials.) So if you like that funky aesthetic, it’s evident again in this tiny pair of opal studs, which I think have a visual onomatopoetic effect, as in “Boom! These are badass fine jewels on my ears.” Feeling inspired? Make them a part of your inventory for $1,950 retail.
