Things that are jet black: the night sky, Chanel #219, Katy Perry’s mane, and Lisa Kim’s new black rhodium plating. It’s a lights-out, midnight-sky kind of shade that took me back to a meal of squid ink pasta—dark, delicious, and mesmerizing—I once ate in Venice, Italy. Kim’s black rhodium is an oil slick that washed over a select number of her silver pieces and froze on contact with a lacquer-like finish that haunts my memory.
“I’ve always had a Gothic side and loved black,” Kim tells JCK. “I tried one contractor, and I just didn’t like the way the pieces were coming back—the color was uneven in places. But then I found an amazing plater with this black black rhodium plating, and it really sets you apart. Plus, I kind of have a black-and-blue fetish and love using blue moonstones with it.”
Just four SKUs with the black rhodium plating exist to date, with retail prices starting at $277 for a pair of small hoop earrings.
Cuffs in silver with black rhodium and blue moonstones start at $1,043, studs in silver with black rhodium with rose-cut blue moonstones and 0.28 ct. t.w. diamonds are $2,265, and talon hoop earrings in silver with black rhodium are $277.
