JCK Las Vegas 2015: A Retail/Tech Editor’s Itinerary

I’m writing this post from a middle seat on a budget airline, my laptop cruelly jabbing into my abdomen as I type.

But no matter! I’m well on my way to the greatest jewelry trade show on earth—JCK Las Vegas. And for that, I will gladly withstand a minor stint in a sardine can.

As a lifelong lover of jewelry and design, I adore seeing all the latest collections in Vegas. But as JCK’s senior editor covering retail and technology, my attention is split evenly between the wares being shown on the floor and the retailers writing orders.

Here, a few highlights from my itinerary this week:

Today

Retailer Breakfast and LUXURY Retailer of the Year Award Presentation. This is always a show highlight—and a great spot to fuel up for the day!—as the industry and JCK gather to celebrate innovative, forward-thinking retailers, ultimately crowning the one who earned the most peer votes. South Seas Ballroom, Level 3, 8:30–10 a.m.

The World of Wearables: Walk-In Exhibit. Richline is sponsoring this tech-focused event, which is set to include award-winning designs from brands including Cuff and Garmin USA. A great chance for me to get my hands on more than one wearable at a time and consider product for the magazine’s Who, What, Wearable column. Tradewinds D, Pool Level, 11 a.m.–3 p.m.

Retailer interviews. On the first day of the big show, I like to talk to lots of retailers about their show itineraries and what they’re looking for in terms of product. I plan to throw on my comfortable sneaks and see you out there!

Friday

Extreme Makeover—Retail Edition: How Social Media Tools Are Changing Retail. James (Jim) Spellos practically lit the room on fire with his fabulous, thought-provoking take on where social media is taking retail during his lecture at AGS’ Conclave 2013. AGS has sponsored his return, and I wouldn’t miss it. Tradewinds AB, 8:30–9:15 a.m.

Italian Trend Red Carpet Event. I’m totally jazzed for this Italian trend show and runway presentation, sponsored by TrendVision and Fiera di Vicenza. Invitation only, South Seas Ballroom, 6–7 p.m.

Saturday

Tech day. This morning I plan to head over to the new tech-focused neighborhoods at JCK for a few appointments with equipment and tech companies, along with some general reporting. A reminder: This year’s show has split what used to be the ETS show into two ‘hoods—the equipment-focused Essentials and the consumer tech-focused Tech. Both promise to be great. Adjacent to one another on Bayside, Level 1.

Hollywood Takes JCK. In this unique seminar, guests will be whisked away into the world of Hollywood costuming with top costume designers Ellen Mirojnick, Meredith Markworth-Pollack, and Lou Eyrich—who will demonstrate their methodologies as they accessorize a little black dress with collections pulled from the JCK show floor. Can’t wait! Currents Lounge, 10:30–11:30 a.m.

Sunday

Yes, I’ll Marry You: Consumer Behavior to Product Trends. Moderated by JCK magazine editor-in-chief Victoria Gomelsky, this panel of industry veterans, Harvey Kanter, Molly Guy, and Shelley Brown, will delve into what makes the modern bride (and groom) tick. 4–4:45 p.m., Tradewinds C/D, Pool Level

Levian Red Carpet Event and JCK Rocks the Beach. Both events are annual traditions for JCK staffers and signal that (alas!) the end is near. But be sure to keep me updated on your store’s happenings all year at evesilind@jckonline.com. And let me know what caught your eye at this year’s big show!
