New York City Watch Week may not be an official thing, but if you take stock of the agenda for next weekend, including a slew of private watch retail events that aren’t mentioned here, you’ll see that the third week of October in NYC is the new Baselworld. The Jewelry District Podcast, Episode 106 (ongoing)

jewelry districtIn the latest episode of The Jewelry District, JCK editor-in-chief Victoria Gomelsky and news director Rob Bates pay tribute to former JCK editor Hedda Schupak, who passed away this month. An industry icon as well as a mentor to Victoria and Rob, Hedda steered the magazine successfully through major changes in the early 2000s and played a key role in the early years of its annual Las Vegas trade show. Rob also updates listeners on the latest news regarding Russian diamond sanctions, and Victoria shares highlights from her recent trip to Japan to visit Grand Seiko’s studio in the mountain town off Shizukuishi.

Meet a cohort of dealers committed to transparency and responsible sourcing of gemstones at this week’s Ethical Gem Fair, taking place at Brooklyn Metal Works in the Prospect Heights neighborhood. Whether they’re supporting artisanal miners and their communities, providing gemstones with verifiable origins and full traceability, committing to fair pay and fair treatment for everyone involved in the supply chain, adhering to clear and responsible environmental policies, promoting health and safety at mines, and/or supplying SCS-certified recycled diamonds and gemstones, these suppliers are at the vanguard of the ethical sourcing movement.

Next weekend, WatchTime New York takes over Gotham Hall in midtown Manhattan for three days of watch brand presentations, industry panel discussions, and opportunities for collectors to engage directly with their favorite watchmakers, including fan favorites such as Kari Voutilainen, Max Büsser of MB&F, and William Massena of Massena LAB.

For buyers interested in microbrands and value-priced watches, this year’s Windup Watch Fair is expected to be the event’s biggest showing ever. Taking place at the Altman Building on West 18th Street in Manhattan, the expo will host around 70 exhibitors, including a new crop of EDC (“everyday carry”) makers selling watches, knives, and apparel.
