It’s just 11 days until Christmas, and while most jewelers are working round the clock this week, it’s possible you’ve already punched out for the year. If you’re lucky enough to be in Paris or London, a high jewelry design class and a selling exhibition should top your to-do list.

The Jewelry District Podcast, Episode 161 (ongoing)
In the latest episode of The Jewelry District, JCK editor-in-chief Victoria Gomelsky and news director Rob Bates talk about the hot topics at last month’s World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO) Congress in Paris, including the question of whether CIBJO should change the terminology around lab-grown diamonds in its Blue Books. Victoria covers Phillips’ record-breaking Decade One watch auction and its star lot, a 1943 Patek Phillippe ref. 1518 with an intriguing backstory, and then she and Rob discuss another rare item with a mysterious history—the Florentine Diamond.

L’École Paris Courses on Jewelry Design: Dec. 17–18 (in person)

Van Cleef & Arpels’ L’École, School of Jewelry Arts is offering a couple of courses on high jewelry design this week at its home in Paris. In Wednesday’s “Once Upon a Time There Was Jewelry Design,” students learn about the first step in the process, drawing. And on Thursday, two sessions of “The Gouaché in High Jewelry”—one on color and the other on materials—focus on techniques related to the painted design that guide craftspeople, from mockup makers to stone setters, who work on a piece of jewel. (“The Gouaché in High Jewelry—The Light” takes place starting Jan. 27.) The courses cost 200 euros each, about $235.
