In the latest episode of The Jewelry District, JCK editor-in-chief Victoria Gomelsky and her cohost, Rob Bates, talk to David Siminski (pictured), vice president of sales at United Precious Metals, about how volatility in the gold and silver markets has been affecting refiners. David also explains what it means to be a primary refiner—as opposed to a smelter—and extends some advice to retailers who deal with refiners, so they can make more money and be more efficient customers.

The Plumb Club’s April podcast is out. In “Natural Diamonds & Lab-Grown Diamonds: A Customer for Both,” Joel Hakimi, an executive at CH Hakimi, discusses why it’s important to avoid thinking about the two categories as competitors, rather, they are parallel product lines, each with their own distinct customers. Hakimi charts the journey of natural diamonds and the rise of lab-grown diamonds in the marketplace, and describes how today’s customer wants to understand a diamond’s origin, as well as its impact and sustainability. He also provides insights into the pricing and benefits of both.
IAC Webinar on Human Rights in the Precious Metals Industry: April 28, 12 p.m. ET (online)
In the first of two webinars on human rights, Initiatives in Art and Culture (IAC), in partnership with the World Gold Council, focuses on the mining sector to examine how human rights are defined within the industry and how they relate to the concept of responsible mining. Panelists tackle questions about how protective legislation and statutes like the Dodd-Frank Act and OECD guidance can be put in place without an unintended negative impact on people’s rights. The esteemed panel additionally highlights the importance of specific case studies in clarifying what success regarding protection of human rights looks like in the mining sector and how to achieve it.
