Former JCK Managing Editor Ren Miller Dies

Reynold “Ren” Miller, who was an editor of JCK for nearly 10 years and of Professional Jeweler for over eight years, died on Oct. 23. He was 70.

After working at two Pennsylvania newspapers—the Altoona Mirror and Eaton’s Express-Times—Miller joined JCK as a copy editor in 1987. He later became the publication’s managing editor.

In 1997, he and other staff members left to form Professional Jeweler, and he served as its executive editor until 2005.

In July 2005, Miller became editor-in-chief of Design NJ, New Jersey’s leading home and decor magazine, where he worked until his passing.

Peggy Jo Donahue, who worked alongside Miller at both JCK and Professional Jeweler, says: “Ren Miller was a prince of a man. Quiet, respectful, and diligent, he was a unparalleled editor, and a faithful friend. He loved the English language and taught us all better and more concise ways to express ourselves.

“His knowledge of the worldwide jewelry industry was vast, and his contacts were everywhere. Whatever the issue—and no matter how much hysteria was in the air—Ren would calmly go about establishing the facts….

“More than anything, he was a patient boss and a great wingman. He understood that writers are human, and that fast-moving events meant sometimes deadlines were missed. You always felt he was on your side.

“Under that quiet exterior, he was wickedly funny and a great joy to be around. All of his professional colleagues will miss him greatly.”

Miller is survived by his wife, Betsy, and a brother, Robert. An online obituary can be seen here.
