Traditionally retail jewelers have rolled over and let the
big box stores call Black Friday their exclusive territory. But in this
economy, the gloves are off. Jewelry store owners let it be known that they
want an early crack at people’s holiday shopping budgets, too. This year many
retail jewelers held Black Friday or Thanksgiving Day weekend sales, product events,
contests, and giveaways to bring customers to their stores. Here’s a sampling

with the busiest shopping day of the year.

In Part II of Retail Thursday’s look at the first week of
the holiday season on Facebook, retail jewelers were all over the first Small
Business Saturday. Created by American Express OPEN (the small business unit of
AMEX) last Saturday was the first seasonal shopping day of its kind set between
Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Some storeowners held special sales on Saturday
only, or in conjunction with events across Thanksgiving Day weekend (starting
with Black Friday).
