J.C. Penney Employee Arrested for Allegedly Stealing $160,000 in Jewelry

Marie Hodang, a J.C. Penney employee in Jacksonville, Fla., was arrested on July 10 after allegedly stealing $160,000 in jewelry from the store.

Hodang was charged with grand theft.

Jacksonville NBC affiliate First Coast News reported that Hodang’s arrest came after a store loss prevention officer called the police. The officer caught Hodang on camera attempting to leave the store with $15,000 in jewelry. They detained her and contacted police.

Hodang allegedly admitted to stealing and consented to searches of her home, locker, and car, where police found cash, safe deposit box keys (which opened boxes filled with more cash), and more than $160,000 in jewelry, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The jewelry was returned to J.C. Penney.

Hodang was released on $50,003 bond. A court date has not yet been set.
