The opal and diamond ring sold for several times its estimated price
Julien’s Auctions held a sale of items from the collection of actress Jane Fonda on Sept. 23 in Los Angeles.
Among the top lots was the star’s engagement ring from Ted Turner. The opal and diamond ring features a 0.55 ct. black opal flanked by two round-cut diamonds of 0.3 ct. t.w. It was estimated to sell for $2,000–$4,000, but it went for $19,200—almost five times its top estimate.
The catalog included a quote from Fonda about the ring. “I have friends who were surprised that I didn’t ask Ted for a big diamond ring, but opals have always brought me luck,” she said. “We did a lot of hunting and fishing, and I’d have to take a big ring off all the time to put on gloves. And I didn’t want Ted to think I was marrying him for his money.”
