On April 29, the United Nations Security Council voted unanimously to lift its decade-long ban on rough diamonds from Côte d’Ivoire.
The action means diamonds from the West African nation, also known as the Ivory Coast, will no longer be blocked by the Kimberley Process.
The sanctions were lifted “in the light of progress made toward the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme implementation and better governance of the sector,” said a statement on the U.N. website.
Other sanctions against the country remain in place.
