Indian Prime Minister Modi Meets With Members of Antwerp Diamond Industry

Modi was in Brussels for the annual India-EU Summit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with a delegation from the Antwerp diamond industry during a visit to Belgium on March 30.

Belgium is one of Europe’s top three trade partners with India and is the second largest exporter of goods to India. The diamond trade accounts for 82 percent of Belgian goods exported to India.

Nearly 75 percent of all rough diamonds traded in Antwerp are exported to India to be processed into polished diamonds. Each year, Antwerp exports 85 million carats of diamonds to India, representing $11 billion.

“Trade relations between Antwerp and India are excellent,” said Ari Epstein, CEO of Antwerp World Diamond Centre. “The fact that Indian Prime Minister Modi has recognized this explicitly by inviting us to meet him personally is therefore greatly appreciated in the Antwerp diamond industry.”
