How a Necklace Might Look Hot Under Your Collar

This season has brought several examples already of jewelry worn over garments in creative and unexpected ways. We’ve seen rings worn over gloves. We’ve seen bracelets worn over sleeves. Perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising to see a tip provided by a guest editor in the February 2010 issue of Glamour magazine, illustrating the styling of a pair of necklaces over a shirt but under its collar.

More often than not, we see a necklace styled against bare skin, or over simply designed collarless garments that are ready-made for adornment. A classic collared shirt, however, presents another styling opportunity for a statement necklace or two.

Jenna Lyons, creative director for J. Crew, styled a chic and very current look for the readers of Glamour, combining a sequined tank, worn as a vest, with a preppy pin-striped shirt. The look is accessorized with a pair of necklaces, a chunky rhinestone piece from lulus.com and an unusual pendant necklace from niN9 by Marquis & Camus. The necklaces fill in the space between the bottom of the shirt collar and the top of the tank and add interest to the overall look. The necklaces also serve to bring the eye up toward the face.

Notice, of course, that the shirt in the illustration is worn substantially buttoned up to the top. If the collar is worn open, a shorter necklace worn against the skin and peeking out from under the shirt is an attractive alternative.
