A 22.09 Ct. Fancy Yellow Diamond With Kimberley Mine Provenance Anchors Heritage’s Fall Auction

Heritage Auctions’ Sept. 28 Fall Fine Jewelry Signature Auction is anchored by a 22.09 ct. fancy yellow diamond called the Kimberley Sunshine, set by British jeweler Pragnell in hand-forged 18k yellow gold talon claws on a platinum band with three graduating rows of French- and carré-cut diamonds. The stone is internally flawless, with a GIA natural colored diamond report and a certificate of origin confirming South African Kimberley Mine provenance. The estimate is $200,000–$250,000.

“At more than 22 carats, this diamond’s size alone is extraordinary,” said Jill Burgum, Heritage’s executive director of fine jewelry, in a statement. “But combine that with its beautiful fancy yellow color, Internally Flawless clarity, documented Kimberley origin, and exceptional Pragnell craftsmanship, and you have a jewel that is remarkable on every level.”

The diamond section supporting it is unusually strong. A necklace spotlights a 22.06 ct. round brilliant; an Oscar Heyman ring boasts a 14.11 ct. fancy yellow flanked by 4.33 cts. t.w. of triangular diamonds (estimate $100,000–$150,000); a Carvin French ring centers a 7.02 ct. oval (estimate $100,000–$120,000); and a Tiffany & Co. ring features a 5.76 ct. fancy yellow surrounded by calibré-cut near-colorless diamonds (estimate $50,000–$70,000).

Sapphires are equally well-represented: a pair of drop earrings with unheated Ceylon yellows totaling approximately 36.75 cts. (estimate $35,000–$45,000); an 18.81 ct. unheated Ceylon yellow ring (estimate $15,000–$20,000); a 17.45 ct. Ceylon blue (estimate $30,000–$50,000); and an 8.44 ct. Burma sapphire offered unmounted (estimate $20,000–$30,000).

Signed pieces from Buccellati, Bulgari, Cartier, JAR, Schlumberger, Van Cleef & Arpels, Verdura, and David Webb represent the designer category. A Boris LeBeau nautical brooch that converts into a tabletop sculpture (estimate $12,000–$18,000) and a de Grisogono brooch depicting an upside-down monkey in yellow sapphires and diamonds provide the entertainment.
