Happy Shark Week: 12 Pieces of Shark-Theme Jewelry to Mark TV With Bite

It’s time again for that weeklong television phenomenon on the Discovery Channel: Shark Week kicks off Sunday Aug. 12. Now in its 25th year, the much-anticipated annual event has a definite cult following, thrilling viewers with cool clips of sharks jumping, biting, attacking, and otherwise terrifying unsuspecting prey.

Who can resist kitschy online video teasers like “Air Jaws Apocalypse” and “The Nightmarish Megalodon (aka Sharkzilla),” which lure fans in with the promise of even more somewhat exhilarating, borderline silly shark footage to air daily on the tube. For example, in the “Great White’s Death Strike,” two oceanographers ponder the G force generated by a Great White in pursuit of a seal; and a G Force Data Logger—naturally—is produced to make the calculations. The resulting conversation is as entertaining as the footage.

“Oh my grief! That’s 29 Gs! It’s almost a death blow without even biting it!”

“I wonder what immediate effect the seal feels when it’s hit with G Force that high? One would assume that maybe it’s tunnel vision, blackouts, and maybe, unconsciousness or death?”

Maybe. I just hope to goodness that their scientific devices can answer that question for us by this time in 2013. Until then, here’s this year’s newest crop of shark jewels.
