These Grown-Up Chokers Elevate Our Favorite ’90s Style

Share

The ’90s are back. Well, that was obvious—take one look at the current fashions on the street and for sale and you might recognize a number of things that once may have belonged in your closet.

But the ’90s are so back, in ways I didn’t even realize until recently. My neighbor’s 17-year-old is asking to trade in her smartphone for a flip phone. College kids are singing ’90s anthems at karaoke (I witnessed this—it was haunting). And then there’s the matter of that era’s films and TV shows making returns in one way or another. I myself have relished the resurgence. As a ’90s kid, I’ll always appreciate baggy pants and a plaid flannel tied around the waist (not necessarily together), and I have also found myself emulating all of Rachel Green’s best styles from Friends. Ah, the power of nostalgia.

But the thing about ’90s kids is they’ve had no choice but to grow up, so while younger generations can get away with wearing those stretchy tattoo-style choker necklaces (I’ve seen more than a few) we likely won’t do much of the same. We’ve left behind our Lip Smackers and Lisa Frank in favor of finer things, so why can’t the same be true for our favorite ’90s jewelry looks? Our young hearts will always remember the days of filling up our shopping baskets at Claire’s, but now we prefer those styles in real gold (with or without diamonds and gemstones).

Surely it’s a sign for retailers to stock up on chokers this season, as brands are making them readily available in their collections. Younger shoppers will look to lower-priced items to emulate an era they never lived through, but for those who did, a fashion-forward token of a time not so long ago—in fine materials—is well worth the investment.

Here are some of the latest chokers worthy of ’90s kids and everyone else who wants to live like they were one, and trust me when I say they’re all that and a bag of chips.
