The pilot program will be based at GIA’s lab in New York

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) will debut the GIA Melee Analysis Service in June.

The service will screen synthetics and treated diamonds from batches of D-to-Z round melee-size stones. The machine can also sort melee by size and color. 

“This system, which incorporates proven instrumentation, standards, and processes used in GIA laboratories, will give the industry and consumers confidence in the characteristics, including color, of these most prevalent stones,” said Tom Moses, GIA’s executive vice president and chief laboratory and research officer, in a statement.

The organization expects to expand the service to all GIA locations.
