GIA Announces New Head of Education as Bev Hori Retires

Duncan Pay (pictured), editor-in-chief of GIA’s quarterly journal Gems & Gemology, has been named vice president and chief academic officer of the Gemological Institute of America, which means he will now oversee the institute’s educational offerings.

Pay replaces GIA senior vice president and chief learning officer Bev Hori, who will retire in May 2018. Hori, who has worked at Ben Bridge Jeweler and Jewelers of America, joined GIA in 2010.

Pay, a 20-year veteran at GIA, will remain editor-in-chief of Gems & Gemology, the journal he has overseen since 2013. Prior to joining GIA in 1998, Pay had more than 13 years of experience in the jewelry industry in both retail and wholesale. He was also course development manager for the Asian Institute of Gemological Sciences in Bangkok, Thailand.

During the transition, Hori will oversee the digital transformation of the GIA’s Richard T. Liddicoat Library and Information Center.

“I am immensely pleased that Duncan has taken on this very important role to carry on Bev’s incredible work to establish professional standards and strive for continuous improvement through education for the gem and jewelry industry,” said Susan Jacques, GIA president and CEO, in a statement.

Added Pay: “Bev has been a wonderful mentor; her sense of mission, clear communication of GIA’s core values, and positive forward thinking are a model for us all.”
