GIA is introducing redesigned colored stone reports and will include origin information for more gemstones than in the past.
The new colored stone identification and origin reports will debut on Jan. 1. They will now provide origin determination for opal, peridot, and demantoid garnet.
GIA already lists country of origin info for ruby, sapphire, emerald, paraiba tourmaline, alexandrite, and red spinel, as well as untreated jadeite jade and omphacite jade from Myanmar or Guatemala.
In addition, the reports will include “enhanced storytelling” that will “make it easy for the trade and consumers to grasp the unique characteristics that bring each gem’s story to life,” according to a GIA statement.
GIA is also rolling out a new fee structure for grading colored stones, and said it will have further details on it in January.
Gary Roskin, editor of the Roskin Gem News Report, tells JCK, “For GIA, or any lab for that matter, to stick their gemological neck out and say they can identify locality, that’s a lot of research effort. The industry will like it, as they want gems that are from known localities….
“With De Beers moving ahead with Origin, GIA is moving ahead with their colored stone origins,” Roskin says. “The timing is good.”
