Getting Ready to Celebrate Tonight’s GEM Awards

The 13th Annual GEM Awards take place tonight at Cipriani 42nd Street, and I have the good fortune to attend. Jewelers of America hosts the affair to recognize the achievements of those whose work helps to raise the profile and status of the jewelry and watch industry. Four categories of awards are routinely given: Lifetime Achievement, Design, Marketing and Communications, and Media Excellence.

This year’s nominees include a number of familiar names—Stephen Webster and Todd Reed, among others—as well as lesser-known ones to me (in the Media category, Jack Forster of Revolution magazine, who covers watches, and since that’s not my beat, I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting him). All candidates are worthy of the recognition, for sure, and I look forward to celebrating their moment with many others. You might recall that JCK’s own Victoria Gomelsky was among last year’s winners.

JA is live-streaming the event for the first time, so those who can’t join us here in the bitter cold city can tune in from hopefully balmier climates. You can also watch social media to spy some of the inevitable shenanigans that will occur by using #GemAwardsLive on Twitter. Undoubtedly, the cocktail-fueled happy hour will lead to at least a few silly selfies, especially when industry ham @adornmentality is in the house. If you’re there tonight, I hope to see you! And if you see me first, please do say hello.
