Jewelry designer Masumi Hayashi is the designer behind the Brooklyn, N.Y.–based Lio and Linn, a maker of sterling silver, bronze, and 14k gold casual styles. Hayashi started her career designing accessories in Tokyo, and a love of fashion led her to New York City in 2001 to gain more experience working for jewelry designers. Eventually, Hayashi debuted her own line in 2008, collections that are rich in minimalist forms, lots of triangle motifs and stone cuts, and organic-looking surface textures such as hammering, fingerprints, and matte finishes. She sketches styles and casts pieces in New York City, getting help from a stone setter for rough-cut and unique-shaped diamonds, including natural-color brown ones and some black to “add power and uniqueness to my pieces,” she says.
