Ambermoda is a family affair for the Gliwinski family, who founded the jewelry design firm 25 years ago when Poland was still under Communist control (it ended in 1989). Mariusz, the head designer, started the operation with his father. Since then, his wife, Danuta, and daughter, Gosia have joined. I interviewed the trio during the 2013 Amberif show in Gdansk.
Mariusz attended Poland’s Lódz Fine Arts Academy, and his designs are inspired by art, architecture, nature (including glaciers), and travel. His signature style features oversize and whimsical geometric forms that make ideal statement pieces on and off the runways (he frequently collaborates with Polish fashion designers, dressing models in his jewelry for shows). Gliwinski’s designs are a fresh, modern take on amber jewelry and elevate an otherwise inexpensive material to a loftier level by using generous cuts, other precious stone accents, and gold settings.
