The plain silver heart could very well be the vanilla ice cream of the jewelry world: bland, plain, and made for the most timid of collectors. That’s true unless you’ve seen G & G Creations’ newest line of sterling heart necklaces dubbed the GG Love collection, which are anything but boring—and surely aren’t for the faint of heart.
Sculpted in oxidized silver and 24k gold, bedazzled with a wide array of gems—from rubies to diamonds and more—and completed with stylized effects on both sides, each weighs anywhere from 16 grams to 25 grams of silver. Twenty SKUs are one-of-a-kinds, while eight more are limited editions of 99 pieces. They range in suggested retail price from $3,900–$12,800, and at press time, about six had sold; certificates of authenticity accompany each purchase. The Boston-based firm debuted them to the trade at globalDESIGN last weekend in Philadelphia.
“The globalDESIGN was the first show that we displayed everything from the collection thus far,” explains Sarven Ipek, director of business development. “We did have a soft trunk show at a local retailer of ours in Boston, but that was a small number of the designs.”
The fact that the heart has been interpreted in so many different ways challenged the design team—Vahe Ghazarian, Esin Guler and gem-setter Mihran Guler—to reinvent the icon into styles that would hopefully serve as future family heirlooms. “They used the heart as a canvas rather than as a symbol,” adds Ipek. Ever the businessman, Ipek maintains that he had both Valentine’s and Mother’s Day gifting occasions in mind from the outset.
The double-sided Octopus one-of-a-kind heart necklace in oxidized silver has 24k yellow gold inlay with 4.25 cts. t.w. orange sapphires and 1.45 cts. t.w. diamonds; $7,800
