Friedman’s board member resigns

Peter Thorner has resigned as a member of Friedman’s Inc. Board of Directors, effective Jan. 12, less than three months after he was first named to the board.

The Savannah-based retailer, which is considering filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, made the announcement in an 8-K filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Thursday. Thorner was elected by Friedman’s board to serve as an independent director of the company in October 2004. In December, he was named to the newly created position of vice chairman of the board.

In the SEC filing Friedman’s said that Thorner’s resignation letter cited, “the substantial time commitment required for service as a director of the company,” as his reason for leaving.
