Four relatively large, high-quality undisclosed synthetic diamonds were recently flagged in a parcel of 20 by Israeli lab EGL International, it announced recently.
While there have been several reports of undisclosed lab-grown melee, the stones detected here were of higher quality and larger size: 0.90, 0.91, 0.96, and 1.71 cts., and of VS-VVS clarity, and J-K color.
“This is worrying for many reasons,” said managing partner and CEO Guy D. Benhamou in statement. “Someone has raised the stakes and thinks it is now possible to introduce higher-quality, larger synthetic diamonds into the diamond-jewelry pipeline.”
The stones were submitted by an “established customer,” he added.
The stones were inscribed with “lab-grown” on the girdle, following dictates from the World Federation of Diamond Bourses, he noted.
