Faustino Alamo Dominguez, 63, and Luis Angel Alamo, 25, the father-and-son owners of Chicago jewelry store Joyeria Angelo, were shot and killed Nov. 8 while chasing a robbery suspect, according to local news sources.
They are the first recorded industry homicides this year, Scott Guginsky, executive vice president of Jewelers’ Security Alliance (JSA), tells JCK.
A surveillance video shows a man in a Chicago Blackhawks hoodie entering Joyeria Angelo around 6 p.m. on Saturday. He ran out of the store less than 30 seconds later, after apparently stealing merchandise.
One of the owners chased the thief into the street and tried to grab him, according to the video. When the thief got away, the other owner joined the pursuit. As they ran down the street, shots rang out.
Dominguez and Alamo suffered multiple gunshot wounds and later died at a nearby hospital. The killer fled in a white Maserati SUV, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Alamo’s brother told CBS News that Alamo had a gun license and was usually armed, but it was unclear if he had a gun on him during the chase or fired at the suspect.
JSA is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information that leads to an arrest, Guginsky says. More details will be available soon on its website.
“If you see any suspicious activity, such as individuals selling large quantities of jewelry, or you believe you came into contact with someone wearing an old-style Chicago Blackhawks jersey, or if you were possibly cased prior to the homicide, please contact the Jewelers’ Security Alliance,” Guginsky says.
JSA president Jennifer Mulvihill adds the organization “offers its thoughts and prayers to the family members and to the members of the community in the aftermath of this horrible senseless act of violence…. It is extremely uncommon to see multiple jewelers killed during a robbery.”
JSA provides tips on how to react if your store is the victim of a robbery in this JCK article.
Cook Country Crime-Stoppers is also offering a $10,000 reward for info submitted to the Chicago Police Department that results in an arrest.
