Echoes of Art Deco Style

This season, many designers and stylists have embraced a mash-up approach to historic fashion references, combining design details from eras often separated by decades. One era that rises to the top in these historic references is the 1920s with the distinctive Art Deco style that was born in that decade and continued into the 1930s. What makes these references current, in part, is the frequent use of yellow or rose gold in addition to the more traditional Art Deco white metals.

The April 2012 issue of Marie Claire contains an eight-page fashion spread entitled “Puttin’ on the Ritz: With Prohibition’s key players in full swing–pearls! feathers! fringe!–the 1920s roar again.” Among the featured looks is a satiny bodysuit and skirt from Haider Ackermann worn with a feather-and-pendant necklace from Tory Burch. The necklace is another example of the choker and pendant trend of which I wrote recently. The model’s shoes are from Christian Louboutin.

Here’s a second 20’s-inspired look from Marie Claire: a sleeveless dress from Alberta Ferretti worn with a headpiece from Jennifer Behr, shoes from Christian Louboutin, and ropes and ropes of pearl necklaces from Tiffany & Co.

Marie Claire also suggests “shop the shoot” for pieces that include drop earrings from Badgley Mischka, a simulated coral and onyx necklace from Kenneth Jay Lane, and tassel earrings from Oscar de la Renta.

The March 2012 issue of InStyle pictures a quartet of looks it calls “Deco-Rationing” featuring Charlize Theron in Gucci adorned with necklaces; Blake Lively in Marchesa accompanied by drop earrings and a ring; Evan Rachel Wood in Gucci also wearing drop earrings and a ring, and Amanda Seyfried in Alberta Ferretti with multi-strand necklaces and rings.

Jewelry of Art Deco style receives its own feature page in the March 2012 issue of InStyle, which notes: “The elegant geometry of ’20s and ’30s art deco is reimagined for spring 2012. Pair the jazzy pieces with strong silhouettes, such as wide-leg trousers and architectural coats.” All the pieces shown utilize white metal: Diamond, crystal, enamel and 18kt white gold earrings from Ivanka Trump Fine Jewelry; sapphire, enamel and sterling silver bracelet from MCL by Matthew Campbell Laurenza; diamond, amethyst and 18kt white gold ring from Deborah Pagani; diamond, chrysoprase and 18kt white gold necklace form Stephen Webster; and diamond, sapphire and 18kt white gold earrings from Canturi Jewels.

The March 2012 issue of Harper’s Bazaar describes “Deco Drama: Spring’s glittery golden touch jazzes up day-to-night glamour.” Along with a bejeweled Lanvin clutch, the piece features a pendant necklace from Lady Grey, earrings from Janis by Janis Savitt, and a rectangular face bracelet from Lanvin.

The March 2012 issue of Elle also considers “Deco Drama,” showing sporty, quirky, minimalist and sophisticated takes on the trend. The featured jewelry consists of a yellow gold-plated bracelet with onyx, white agate and cubic zirconia from Lara Bohinc; crystal earrings from Dries Van Noten; and rose gold-plated tassel earrings with Swarovski crystals from Mawi.

Here’s a second take on the 20’s theme from the March 2012 issue of Elle entitled “Flapper’s Delight.” The jewelry featured consists of earrings from Etro; cubic zirconia-embellished sterling silver and onyx ring from Lara Bohinc; and a polished gold zebra-head bracelet from Kenneth Jay Lane.

The March 2012 issue of Lucky also tracks the Roaring ’20s as an accessory trend for the season, featuring a long faceted jet necklace from carolee.com and “Chateau at Midnight” drop earrings from samanthawills.com.

The February 2012 issue of Marie Claire features a collage of fashion and jewelry entitled “Deco Chamber” against a background photo of the Chrysler Building. The jewelry consists of a diamond watch from Piaget, gold panther earrings from Cartier, and a diamond and onyx ring from David Webb. Marie Claire opines: “Anything goes in bugle-beaded and gold-fringed eveningwear that shimmies and shakes.”

One reason to expect that Art Deco style will be on-trend for some time is the anticipation for Baz Luhrmann’s new film adaptation of The Great Gatsby starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan, due to be released in December. The March 2012 issue of Harper’s Bazaar notes: “Gucci and Ralph Lauren showed Daisy Buchanan-worthy frocks, Tiffany & Co. is providing the film’s art-deco baubles and Olympia Le-Tan’s clutch transforms the book into an It bag.” The earrings pictured above are from Tiffany & Co.
