Doug Parker Wins the AGS Shipley Award

Doug Parker, vice president of New York City-based A.F. Greenwood Co., won the American Gem Society’s 2014 Robert M. Shipley Award, its highest honor, at a ceremony at its annual conclave on April 26.

Parker was honored for his “lasting impact upon both the American Gem Society and the AGS Laboratories, because of his outstanding commitment to professional excellence, education, innovation, and customer and community service,” said former Shipley winner Bill Sites, who inducted him.

Parker has served as chair of the AGS lab board of managers and the AGS gemological science committee. His career includes working at retail, serving as a diamond grading instructor for the Gemological Institute of America, and three years as a vice president of Tiffany & Co.

The recipient of the award, named for the group’s founder, is a surprise every year, and Parker seemed genuinely touched when thanking the group for the honor.

The annual event was held April 23–26, at the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego.
