Day’s Jewelers Named One of Maine’s Best Places to Work

For the fourth consecutive year, Day’s Jewelers, which is headquartered in Waterville, Maine, has been named one of the best places to work in Maine by the Society for Human Resource Management, part of the Maine State Council.

The annual rundown assesses workplace policies, practices, and demographics, as well as the overall employee experience—and awards companies that maintain high standards in each.

Kristie Jandreau, human resources manager at Day’s Jewelers, said in a statement that, above all, “Day’s values people.” She added: “The company’s guiding principles emphasize our dedication to fostering relationships with our customers, communities, business partners, and, most importantly, our employees. We are in the business of love and lifetime commitments; the same efforts we put into selecting jewelry that will last for generations is put into standing by our employees through life’s ups and downs.”

Day’s Jewelers owner Jeff Corey said he’s inspired by the writings of Hal Rosenbluth, particularly The Customer Comes Second, a book that lays out the importance of business owners creating an atmosphere in which employees are respected and cared for—an environment that supports a unified and goal-driven team.

“In his book, Mr. Rosenbluth contends that the most important element in building a sustainable business is happy and motivated employees,” said Corey in the same statement. “The five things, in this order of importance, are most likely to cause people to love their jobs: interesting work, recognition for a job well done, being part of the decision-making process where opinions and ideas are valued, benefits, and pay. Day’s leaders are committed to do our very best to pay attention to these with every single team member.”

He added, “We often compare our company to a fine timepiece where over 200 individual parts work in unison. If one part fails, the watch will fail to operate correctly.”

Day’s was founded in Portland, Maine, in 1914 and employs 140 people across seven stores in Maine and New Hampshire (it will bow its eighth store this fall in Nashua, New Hampshire).

The retailer will celebrate its inclusion on the “best of” list, alongside the other companies honored, at an awards ceremony on Oct. 9.
