Cuffs Aplenty: The Yin

Not all the cuff bracelets featured in fashion editorial this season add a strong element of yang to an ensemble—there are also some decidedly feminine designs that provide an element of yin. The softer aspect may emanate from materials, textures, or shapes, all factors that are present in these examples of current jewelry design:

Pearls are the theme of this fashion spread from the October issue of Elle, which features an akoya pearl and white diamond cuff with sapphire cabochons from Fabergé, upper right. The model at right wears pearl and diamond Mikimoto earrings and a silver and pearl ring from KumKum with her embellished calf-leather dress from Balmain. The “pearl-encrusted” handbag center left is from Dolce & Gabbana.

The October issue of Lucky highlights the gilded lace designs of Monika Knutsson, including a wide lace cuff plated with 24k gold. Also pictured is a sterling silver-plated necklace and a 24k gold-plated ring by the designer.

Actress Jessica Chastain appears in the December issue of Marie Claire wearing a sumptuous cutout gown from Valentino Haute Couture accented with a pair of elaborately designed cuff bracelets from Lynn Ban. Chastain’s drop earrings are from Solange Azagury-Partridge.

British singer Corinne Bailey Rae is pictured in InStyle Makeover 2012 wearing a cuff of hammered brass, citrine, and tourmaline by Jody Candrian. The singer’s dress is from Oscar de la Renta, intriguingly accented with a necklace of resin beads in matching hues from Pebble London.

A current ad for Michael Kors pictures a model in emerald green (Pantone’s color of the year for 2013) wearing a pair of identical cuffs accented with textured brass set with green glass crystals, the color and texture softening their look.

Actress Sienna Miller is pictured in the January 2012 issue of InStyle wearing a white open-sleeve gown from Alessandra Rich accented with a pair of cuffs, not attributed in the magazine, with curved detail that provides a bow-like effect on her wrists.

A pair of silver cuffs from Robert Lee Morris accessorize a dress from Donna Karan New York in the November 2012 issue of Vogue, pictured with Pierre Hardy sandals and a Tod’s tote. One of the cuffs is wide and straight in design; the other, equally wide but of a much softer curved design—providing a balance of yin and yang.
