One might say that fashion is at a crossroads, as the cross motif is once again a popular design motif. The looks accented by the cross motif are typically anything but demure.
The September 2012 issue of Marie Claire styles crosses as part of a medieval theme featuring “caged bodices, chain-mail sheaths, and gothic extras.” In the above photo, a cross necklace from J/Hadley peeks from underneath a chain necklace from Stephen Dweck. The model also wears a diamond ring from Loree Rodkin and a gunmetal ring from Aida Bergsen. Her jacket, skirt and boots are from Salvatore Ferragamo and her belt from Emporio Armani.
In this photo from the September issue of Marie Claire, a “rosary necklace” from David Yurman is paired with a chunky stone necklace from Gucci. The model also wears a pair of matching cuffs from Alexis Bittar. The model’s dress, bra, and briefs are from Dolce & Gabbana; her belt is by Fleet Ilya.
Actress Sofia Vergara appears on the cover of the September 2012 issue of Allure wearing a gold and diamond cross necklace by Me & Ro as an accent to an off-the-shoulder dress from Tucker by Gaby Basora and a bra by Parfait.
Singer Jordan Sparks appears on the cover of the September 2012 issue of Redbook wearing a trio of necklaces. The cross and wishbone necklaces are from House of Harlow; the tooth necklace is by Sarah Stein. Sparks also wears earrings from House of Harlow; a heart and arrow bangle from Melinda Maria; a jeweled cuff from Otazu; a spike bracelet from CC Skye; a nailhead stone bangle from Melinda Maria, and a ring from Isharya. Her shirt is by Helmut Lang and her skirt from Alice + Olivia.
The August 2012 issue of Marie Claire includes a photo spread entitled “Bad Religion: For the love of all that’s holy! Lace and leather make crosses easy to bear.” Among the featured jewelry are cross, skull, and cherub-bedecked earrings from Lydia Courteille and a cross-shaped ring from Elise Dray at Alchemist. The photo montage also includes an unusual nose ring from Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci.
An ad for Armenta in the September 2012 issue of Vogue includes cross-shaped dangle earrings.
A current ad for Guess includes a model styled with a chunky link bracelet and cross-shaped dangle earrings.
The September 2012 issue of Elle profiles Fashion Week mover and shaker Jenne Lombardo, as she remixes punk and professional in fall’s black and white separates. In two of the photos, she wears a cross pendant identified as her own. She also wears a brass necklace from A.L.C., pink gold earrings from Repossi, gold bangles from Roberto Coin, and a brass and crystal cuff from Push by Pushmataaha, along with other unidentified jewelry that is her own.
Of course, Madonna has long been associated with using crosses as part of her concert costuming. She appears in the September 2012 issue of InStyle wearing an unidentified gem-studded cross pendant along with what appears to be skull and bones earrings.
The Aug. 27, 2012 issue of People queries whether Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders’s wife, actress and model Liberty Ross, is wearing a “revenge wardrobe” as she contemplates divorce, including a jeweled crucifix which possibly “repels ‘trampires’.” Her cross necklace might just be reflective of cross purposes.
