Bonhams’ first London sale of the year showed that colored stones continue to be hugely coveted, with many lots selling for several times their estimates in hotly contested bidding wars.
The sale achieved $6.6 million in total sales.
“The sale performed exceptionally well and generated strong interest from buyers in the U.K., Europe, the U.S., and Asia,” said Jean Ghika, the head of jewelry for the U.K. and Europe. “I was particularly delighted to see many of our colored gemstones sell so well, some by up to 10 times their presale estimates, which is an excellent indication of how strong the market is.”
Highlights of the auction included:
• 21.35 ct. sugarloaf cabochon Kashmir sapphire and diamond ring, which sold for $443,000, more than three times its highest estimate
• 17.97 ct. Burmese sapphire and diamond ring, $278,000, three times its highest estimate
• 9.05 ct. pear-shape colorless diamond ring by Harry Winston, $534,000
• 7.1 ct. fancy light pinkish-brown diamond ring, $179,000, five times its highest estimate
• A signed Chanel citrine-set twist necklace, $104,000, 10 times its highest estimate
