Colored Diamonds, Colored Stones Hot at Christie’s

The Christie’s May 13 Magnificent Jewels auction was highlighted by the sale of a 5.18 ct. pink diamond for $10.7 million and a Kashmir sapphire that shattered a record set the previous night.

The 5.18 ct. rectangular-cut fancy vivid pink diamond ring sold for $10.7 million, or $2 million a carat, within its $9.5 million–$12.5 million estimate.

The cushion-shape Kashmir sapphire ring of 35.09 carats sold for $7.3 million ($209,689 per carat) to an Asian private collector, setting a world record for a Kashmir sapphire and substantially beating its $3 million–$4 million estimate.

That sapphire beat the record set the night before at Sotheby’s, when a 30.23 ct. Kashmir sapphire and diamond brooch sold for $6.1 million.

Colorless diamonds were also represented: A 55.52 ct. pear-shape D-color flawless type IIa diamond sold for a $9.03 million ($162,711 a carat), within its $8.5 million–$10 million estimate.

The overall sale achieved $97.1 million, selling 77 percent by lot and 81 percent by value.
