Claire’s Appoints New CEO As Predecessor Abruptly Resigns

Accessories retailer Claire’s has appointed Beatrice Lafon, current president of Claire’s Europe, as its new CEO. She replaces James D. Fielding, who served for less than two years.

Fielding, former president of Disney Store, took control of the company in June 2012.

“In Beatrice, we have a strong leader with deep retail experience,” said board chairman Peter P. Copses in a statement. “She has an intimate understanding of our business and a track record of driving sales in existing locations and successfully opening new stores.”

Lafon’s ascension—and Fielding’s departure—comes as company comps fell.

Same-store sales dropped 10.7 percent for the fourth quarter of 2013 (ending Feb. 1) from the prior year. North America comps dropped 12 percent; those in Europe fell 8.5 percent.
