November is a month of transition. Move on from Halloween while still feeling the autumn warmth, slipping on sweaters and sipping hot tea, gazing at what remains of the colorful leaves. Inch closer to Thanksgiving and the fascination with fall morphs into that magical feeling of winter, where the desire to be cozy deepens (out of tradition and necessity—it gets cold quick!), and the holiday hit list begins to play on the radio.

During that transition, new articles of clothing are added to the mix. The sweaters persist, though nothing quite says “holiday” like something festooned with sparkles. As for color, it appears November’s birthstones know precisely what we need. Citrine and topaz: two gorgeous gems that seem just right to represent this time of year. Your citrine, that golden goodness that almost mimics the changing leaves with its yellow, orange, and brown varieties, like it’s plucked from the harvest—a fitting choice for November, when it’s still considered autumn.

After Thanksgiving, when Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” will no doubt blare from speakers nationwide, topaz feels equally fitting. Though you’ll find it in citrine’s honeyed shades, the gem also cools off in icy shades of blue, with pink and purple in between.

Like those born in the month before them, November kids have got it good. Because while we don’t tend to get as collectively excited about these gemstones as we would about, say, tourmaline or opal, they’re absolute stars. And the work these designers have done with them proves it.
