Citizen Serves Up a Commemorative US Open Timepiece

People said I’d watch a lot of TV during my maternity leave. And they were right—in addition to the usual Netflix binge-watching opportunities and heaping forkfuls of “fake news,” I took in a ton of tennis. The timing aligned with both the French Open and Wimbledon and I saw it all, literally from First Round to Men’s Final, ceremonies, press conferences, every last bit.

Now that I’m back to work, the U.S. Open happens to be underway, and I’ve had to miss a bunch of matches (though I still have MSNBC on a continuous loop in the background when I’m working from home—I just can’t look away).

If you follow tennis, you know it’s a different U.S. Open this year, with many of the top seeds bowing out due to injuries or family-related situations (Exhibit A: Serena Williams, who gave birth to baby girl Sept. 1).

But for American watchmaker Citizen, the 2017 tournament is a landmark occasion: It’s their 25th anniversary as the Grand Slam event’s official timekeeper. Most of the buzz surrounding this milestone understandably has been around the brand’s Billie Jean King collaboration, an elegant timepiece clad in tennis whites, complete with a mother-of-pearl dial and a gleaming stainless steel case.

Citizen has also released a special edition watch designed to appeal to a broad base of tennis enthusiasts. Less publicized, but equally collectible, the Citizen PRT 25th Anniversary U.S. Open Commemorative Edition Watch features a dark navy blue dial detailed with the official U.S. Open logo. Finished with a stainless steel case and bracelet, it’s a chic sportif unisex style that celebrates the love of the game and all the athletes that make it so compelling, from Stefan Edberg and Monica Seles (the champions in 1992) to the winners that emerge in the days ahead.

Those familiar with Citizen will appreciate that the 25th Anniversary Commemorative Edition utilizes the brand’s patented Eco-Drive technology, reinforcing the brand’s dedication to environmentally friendly timepieces with light-powered capabilities.

The watch is limited to 1,100 pieces globally. Don’t miss your shot!
