But don’t worry, my mom is on the case. That’s right, since this online-only jewelry sale is perfectly timed for Mother’s Day gift-giving, I thought I’d let my madre curate her favorite pieces for your perusal. And I think they’re all really good choices.
My mother is a hard-core jewelry lover and collector, appreciates designer pieces but mostly sticks to unsigned treasures, and since she gets me (and anyone who dares shop with her) to buy jewelry all the time, I thought, why not let her hunt down the finds worth bidding on?
Plus, I knew she’d enjoy combing through the 160 lots—since she’s stuck at home like the rest of us, pictures of incredible jewelry for sale could be something, perhaps the only thing, to lure her away from 24/7 MSNBC (to be fair, there is also some Britbox action).
Christie’s purposefully added a number of spring-inspired jewels spanning floral and animal motifs to the mix—not my mom’s thing—but she was into the abundance of colored gemstones and particularly loved the gold statement pieces.
Bids close Friday at 10 a.m. EDT, so if you see something you like, don’t hesitate. Maybe my mom’s comments, also included with her picks, will convince you to go for it.
“I love this Cartier ring. Moonstones are dreamy, and this stone is an elongated oval, transversely set, which I think is unusual. It has what appears to be a cat’s-eye phenomenon running down its center from left to right. The sapphires and emeralds bring out great color in the moonstone. And at 18 grams of 18k gold, it is weighty and will show beautifully on the hand.”
“My favorite jewelry design house of all time, from which I own nothing, is Van Cleef & Arpels. This necklace is 16.5 inches long and a little over one-half inch at its widest, with a massive weight of 80.7 grams, but I think it would look delicate on the neckline. It is so elegant!”
“This bracelet is a showstopper. The sapphires are so blue and numerous, and the bright diamonds set in platinum just make the sapphires pop even more. The best part of this substantial piece is that it is adjustable.”
“These 18k gold, bright pink tourmaline earrings by Bulgari are an exact match to an estate ring I bought years ago. At 0.86 inch long and 0.39 inch wide, they are a perfect everyday size. I like the clean look of the tubogas style. These earrings are clip-ons, without a post, which I would add.”
“This piece is by another of my most favorite designers: Buccellati, whose designs and workmanship I have admired for years. It wears very close to the neckline and each shell-like, or leaf-like, link contains three diamonds. The links are open at the back to let the light shine brilliantly through each diamond. A fabulous piece!”
“These Tiffany opal earrings are all about the color and the design and are very special. The precise setting of the gorgeous blue opal inlay is stunning, and the twisted design of the earring just captures the eye. The earrings weigh 23.5 grams, but the omega post backs promise comfortable wear.”
“I love these Cartier diamond hoops. At just under one inch long and 0.48 inch wide, these elegant earrings can be worn every day or for special occasions. They have snap closures, which are secure and easy to put on.”
“Another perfect, elegant VCA choice. The beautiful curve of diamonds weighs in at 0.3–.04 ct. on each earring. At a little less than three-quarters of an inch long and 0.59 inch wide, they are a versatile choice for any occasion—or none at all!”
Top: You have less than 24 hours to bid on the jewelry up for auction in the Christie’s Jewels Online sale. Among the items, from left: cabochon ruby and enamel frog brooch and 18k gold necklace, both David Webb; and Paloma Picasso for Tiffany & Co. nephrite and amethyst earrings.
