With the influx of gender-neutral jewelry hitting the market (see some amazing options here), it only makes sense that the market for wedding jewelry go the same way.
The new collection from Richmond, Va., jeweler Sun & Selene isn’t the first to offer gender-neutral options, but Ceremony, as it is dubbed, does so beautifully.
The designs are simple, but their artisanal nature shines through. Glossy bands with a variety of widths and finishes, the pieces aren’t overtly feminine or masculine, so a woman wouldn’t necessarily be wearing a “men’s” band or vice versa. It’s hard to put my finger on what exactly would make a classic wedding band gender-neutral, but certainly not every band on the market looks the part. Sun & Selene nails it.
The line also includes another design, called Arc, that has, well, an arc that would presumably nest with an engagement ring. The slightly thicker hammered version is shown on the brand’s website paired with a straight band, showing that two rings need not sit flush to look amazing.
The bands can be customized to work with existing engagement rings (Sun & Selene has gorgeous options there, too), with choice of width, finish, and polish—all of which can be chosen online via the brand’s website, negating the need to go in-store. All bands are handcrafted in the brand’s studio, using recycled 14k white and yellow gold.
Sun & Selene was founded in 2017 by Brittanny DeRaffele, a graduate of Radford University. The brand gets its name from Selene, ancient goddess of the moon, and the designer’s attraction to the sea and sun—though DeRaffele was born in Texas, her parents are from the Caribbean. Astrology, and a connection with the universe, are a pillar of the brand’s designs.
