Brooches: Spring 2013 Update

Seeing model and television personality Heidi Klum host the finale of Project Runway on April 25, one couldn’t help but notice the pair of Lorraine Schwartz brooches accenting her colorful Jean Paul Gaultier print jumper and dark blazer. While brooches haven’t been the primary focus of any recent fashion editorials, they continue to appear as eye-catching accents to a variety of designer looks and remain a chic option for the savvy jewelry lover.

Klum’s brooches are not a matched pair. The larger one, which resembles a round floral design, is unexpectedly pinned directly above the smaller brooch, which resembles a starburst. USA Today pictures Klum with designer mentor Tim Gunn; the Project Runway Season 11 winner, Michelle Lesniak Franklin; and a model wearing one of Franklin’s winning designs.

Another creative use of brooches, a matched set from Fred Leighton worn together at one side of a jewel neckline, appears in the March 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar. The ring is also from Fred Leighton. The dress is by Dior.

Actress Olivia Palermo wears a pair of identical diamond brooches, designer unidentified, along the neckline of her leather dress from Whistles in this photo from the April 15, 2013 issue of People. Notice the slightly asymmetrical placement of the pins.

Butterflies and insects rendered in stunning figural brooches are featured in the May 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar: “What we love: Spring’s newest accessories have us all aflutter.” The center of the page is adorned with a butterfly brooch from Van Cleef & Arpels. Also pictured is a butterfly brooch from Etername, insect brooches from Stephen Webster and Delfina Delettrez, and, bottom left, a butterfly-adorned ring from Le Vian.

A dragonfly brooch from the Tiffany & Co. Blue Book Collection is also spotlighted in the May 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar.

The March 2013 issue of Elle highlights Dior’s “revamped classic accessories for spring”: “Raf Simons has brought a healthy dose of modernity to the house of Dior since taking the reins last spring, and the accessories front is no exception.” Among the featured designs is a lily of the valley brooch, circa 1966.

The May 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar announces a new collection of jewels, including a set of swallow brooches, pictured, from Sidney Garber by Brooke Garber Neidich. The bird brooches were designed for Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s Fall 2013 fashion collection for The Row.

A 1950’s-inspired cape, skirt, and gloves from Miu Miu accented with a bold brooch worn at the collar are pictured in the March 2013 issue of Vogue. The brooch is also by Miu Miu. The flats are by Marc Jacobs.

A Giorgio Armani starburst-shaped brooch commands the center of the horoscope page from the March 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar.

A brooch styled to appear as a ring in the March 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar is a fish design from Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co.

The February 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar celebrates Chanel’s release of the fragrance Chanel Les Exclusifs 1932, created in honor of the year Coco Chanel launched her fine jewelry collection. A starburst brooch from Chanel accents the page.
