Britt’s Pick: Alternative Sapphire Engagement Ring by Michelle Oh

I can’t quite kick my infatuation with all sorts of engagement rings at the moment, which is sort of wild because, if you’ve been following this blog for the last eight years, you will find that I don’t often speak of wedding jewelry.

Until now—so, better late than never. And it’s important, too, since wedding jewelry is a vital category for most (if not all) jewelry retailers.

Depending on your location and customer demographic, you may find some of your customers to be drawn to the same things I currently am, which lean toward the anti-traditional.

So next up on our tour of engagement rings in my imaginary collection: this stunner from London-based designer Michelle Oh.

Oh, is this one covet-worthy. A whimsical design that spotlights our gemstone du mois—September’s sapphire—this comprises two sapphires, an aquamarine, and a diamond in one asymmetrical beauty. What I love about this piece is that it meets the requirements of the engagement ring “trend” (is it a trend?) I can’t seem to stop talking about recently, but it doesn’t limit itself to that. Anyone could wear this ring for their wedding or otherwise. How special would this be as a birthday gift for a September born?

But it’s primarily wedding jewelry that Michelle Oh is focused on—custom at that—though a selection of ready-to-ship creations from its website are available as well, many of them one-of-a-kind (though all are technically unique, as natural gemstones are used in each piece).

One of my favorite sections on the brand’s website is a page dedicated to jewelry advice, particularly this literature on engagement rings.
“By deciding not to purchase an off-the-shelf ring that any number of people on the high street could have, you’re acknowledging your partner’s individuality by wanting to create something special just for her. What better way than this, to commemorate the start of your life together?”

Does anything sum up the current demand of young shoppers better than this?

Established in 2011, the eponymous brand is the work of Michelle Oh, the Jakarta, Indonesia–born designer that seeks to serve her clients with individualized, personal pieces—no trends, no fast fashion. Interested parties can make an appointment for a consultation via the brand’s website.
