I’ve been thinking a lot about Radiant Orchid. Pantone historically seems to have the magic touch—from Tangerine Tango to Emerald, its announcement of Color of the Year results in an abundance of that hue, from clothing to housewares to jewelry (see its colorful history here). It was likely Emerald in particular, given its name and our industry’s ownership of the precious stone, that made us eager to embrace the Color of the Year in such an overwhelming way. Green was everywhere on the runways, the red carpets, in the malachite home decor that I’ve been coveting ever since I got wind of the trend (still, a year later). But there’s something about Radiant Orchid that feels off. Maybe it’s my opinion that purple is an acquired taste. Perhaps I haven’t been doing enough window shopping lately. Did I not pay enough attention to the runways this year? I just don’t feel that the lavender hue is the color that seems to define 2014, as other choices from Pantone have done so successfully. So how come I’m doing all of this complaining and then showing you a jewel rich with purple? Because these earrings are extraordinary, and if more purple designs continue to be as lovely as Rina Limor’s, I may soon be changing my tune. Lovely amethyst stones are carved with a botanical design in 18k yellow gold settings that add richness to the look and get even more dazzling with a frame of diamonds. No matter what the Color of the Year may be, this duo is undoubtedly always in favor. What are your thoughts on the 2014 Color of the Year?
