Orange ranks far down on my list of favorite colors, but one shade is the exception—and it’s the precise one found on this ring by Marrow Fine.
Even its name, melon (aaah!), evokes a simultaneously refreshing and warm feel. My favorite flavor of gelato, melon is also the hue of a perfect Hawaii sunset, and a memory of my grandmother’s favorite color.
While the melon enamel was the first element of Marrow Fine’s ring to strike me, it definitely wasn’t the last. The color play at work here is fantastic—the brand uses its signature bold-block color in a softly contrasting, California-cool style set with aquamarine and opal.
If you ask Marrow Fine founder and creative director Jillian Sassone, the ring is more a mermaid of sorts (and I can’t disagree). “I color-matched the melon enamel to the pops of pink that flash inside of the Australian opal,” she says. “This colorway feels playful and fun, and I would call her ‘celestial mermaid.’ I’m not sure what that is exactly, but it feels like this!”
Sassone notes, “This is the first prototype of a much bigger concept that was inspired by my travels to Marrakech last fall.” The ring is in the Jillian’s Vault collection, which will be officially released on Dec. 5, just in time for the holidays. Each piece from the collection of never-before-seen styles tells a story, from the designer’s travels to her love for rare and inspiring gemstones.
This ring’s sherbet-y colors might bring to mind thoughts of spring and summer, but color is a year-round obsession—and ideal for holiday gifting.
“We’re seeing a renewed appetite for color,” Sassone says. “Opals are still having a major moment—their shifting play of color makes them feel almost alive, perfect for anyone who wants a gemstone with real personality. We can’t keep our opal one-of-a-kinds in stock.
“Classic jewel tones are also expected to be popular this holiday: sapphire blues, emerald greens, deep garnets, and warm citrines. They feel rich and timeless, but still fresh enough to make holiday gifting feel special,” Sassone adds.
