Britt’s Pick: Macadam’s Mirage Pendant

Share

Some jewelry invites you to stare at it for hours, because of its color or miraculous design. Other jewelry demands you do so.

Macadam’s Mirage pendant is in the latter category, and it marvels with both its creation and color. “It is called the Mirage necklace because unless one spends time with it, one cannot be sure of the center sapphire’s color, as it changes with light and position,” designer Perle Adler says.

In the picture above, we’re treated to flashes of yellow and blue, a vivacious image that promises to be even more amazing in person.

“It all started with the stone for the Mirage necklace: This 8.56-carat radiant-cut parti-color sapphire was one of those have-to-have-it, a true coup de coeur,” Adler says. “After spending time with it and observing its behavior with light, the idea of the design emerged. The parti-color sapphire was going to be set in a two-tone setting to bring out all its colors—the platinum echoes the blue, and the 18k yellow gold brings out the yellow.

“This gem is bursting with colors, and the structure sought to bring them out with a figurative ripple effect through the mix of crisp lines and curves and the stylized openings designed to let the light reflect through the high polished sphere into the sapphire.”

While that sapphire is the centerpiece of the design, no detail was spared to complement it. Custom-cut diamonds accent the bail that holds the pendant on the chain. A dome-shaped back gives the piece its depth, with a row of sapphires and diamonds ringing the dome—which opens like a locket, where it can be inscribed to hold a private message for the wearer.

“As with every Macadam design, this necklace is meant to be worn anytime, anywhere,” Adler says. “We love it with jeans as much as dressed up.”
