Opaque gemstones are having a moment—onyx perhaps most prominently of all—but it’s still uncommon to see one in an engagement ring.
LÖF’s Savoy ring could be an engagement ring, and it certainly makes the case for more onyx use in wedding jewelry. After all, the contrast between that dark, glossy gem and bright, sparkling diamonds (and in this case, a white sapphire) is second to none.
Though onyx is of-the-moment, there’s a timeless allure to this ring. Its clean, architectural angles lean art deco, while its substantially wide pavé band is forever a classic. The look in its entirety isn’t overly romantic—it’s not frilly or delicate like many of the vintage settings in demand right now. But for the right customer (and I imagine there would be many), everything about this piece is exactly right.
An unusual layout, as well as the additional band in onyx, makes the Savoy the type of never-seen-it-before engagement ring today’s wedding clientele want—a rare style, something no one else will have.
“I think clients are gravitating toward materials that feel distinctive within fine jewelry. Onyx delivers that,” says LÖF founder and creative director Morgan Mackintosh. “Its deep, uniform black creates a strong visual anchor, and the high contrast against gold and diamonds gives the piece a sculptural, modern edge.
“It also taps into a broader shift I’m seeing where people want pieces that feel different from traditional all-gold or all-diamond designs,” she says. “The rise of materials like wood and unconventional stones across the industry mirrors that appetite for contrast, texture, and individuality.”
Mackintosh reports she’s received a number of inquiries about onyx since creating the Savoy ring, so she may have started a trend among her brand’s customers. Here’s hoping, for both our sakes and the sake of clients looking for something different, we’ll see more styles like this in the future.
