Britt’s Pick: Hine Fine Jewelry’s Pebble Earrings

While we may not be comfortable just yet thinking winter is definitely in the rearview, we’re hoping the “in like a lion” part of March is over. For this season between wet, cold weather and the beautiful sunny days ahead, I’m turning to one of my favorite winter holdovers—icy blue.

I’ve been holding on to this photo of Hine Fine Jewelry’s custom Pebble earrings for the past couple of months, mulling over their cloudy aesthetic that feels almost like a sweet lullaby. The chalcedony centers have a hazy, comforting quality, set within Hine’s signature Texan-inspired craftsmanship that makes the brand’s pieces instantly recognizable.

“These one-of-a-kind Pebble earrings were actually inspired by the ones I designed for my own wedding in Scotland,” says Hine founder and designer Rachael Bennett. “I originally leaned into the ‘something blue’ tradition, but I wanted it to feel subtle and not overtly bridal. Blue has always been complicated for me because aquamarine is my birthstone but I’ve never been particularly drawn to its color. I gravitate toward muted, natural palettes, which is how the icy blue-gray chalcedony came into play.

“I’m very drawn to cabochons in general—I love how the color diffuses and feels softer on the eye. The icy blue-gray chalcedony feels visually light, but the size is large enough to really take up space on the ear and make a statement. Your eye moves from the cool blue-gray stone to the white pearls and bright diamonds, while the yellow gold grounds everything in warmth.”

In creating the pair, Bennett looked not only to her design history but to world history. “The design process was honestly a bit of a Frankenstein approach,” she explains. “I pulled the pebble diamond halo from one of my earliest Hine designs, and the three dangling pearls were inspired by Anne Boleyn’s iconic Tudor-era initial necklace. I loved the idea of combining that romantic historic reference with something contemporary.”

Balancing romance—the feminine delicacy of the dangling pearls—with the bolder presence of the icy blue cabochon, this pair resists easy definition. And that’s just the way we like it: contemporary and Tudor, daring and sweet.

In terms of sales, Bennett says icy blue is a winner. “This shade of blue does well for us because it reads almost as a neutral—it’s gentle and understated, not polarizing,” she says. “It’s an easy entry point for clients who want the impact of color without committing to something too bold.”
